What is PSHE Education?

Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. Our PSHE education draws on good practice, and reflects the needs of our pupils. It builds, where appropriate, on the statutory content already outlined in the national curriculum, the basic school curriculum and in statutory guidance on relationship and health education.

Why do we need to teach PSHE?

According to the latest guidance from the government, via the National Curriculum, every school needs to have a broad and balanced curriculum that:

• promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society,
• equips pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions
• prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life’.

How have we decided to structure our PSHE Education Curriculum?

Here at Easington we have purchased a scheme called ‘Jigsaw’ to assist in the delivery of our curriculum. Jigsaw is a comprehensive and completely original PSHE Education programme for the whole primary school. 

Jigsaw has two aims for all children:

• to build their capacity for learning
• to equip them for life

Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. A variety of teaching strategies are used and we are mindful of each child’s preferred learning style. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This enables each Puzzle to start with an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for staff and children alike. There will be a Weekly Celebration that highlights a theme from that week’s lesson across the school, and encourages children to reflect this learning in their behaviour and attitudes.

Easington CE Primary Academy is an inclusive church school at the heart of the community. We strive to enable all pupils to reach their full potential and become responsible citizens who care for their environment and make a positive contribution to society.

Our Safeguarding Curriculum 

The safety and wellbeing of children is at the heart of everything we do at Easington CE Primary Academy. 

Opportunities are identified in the taught curriculum for children to learn about how to keep themselves and others safe and enable them to contribute positively within and beyond our school community. 

Our curriculum provides opportunities to experience life in its diversity, to acquire knowledge, understanding and skills to ensure personal development. It is supplemented by Lyfta and Diversity Role Models Videos which allow our pupils an amazing insight into the world of others. Personal safeguarding skills are supported by our Personal Development offer to ensure that our vision is achieved.

Our Safeguarding team meets fortnightly to review behaviour and safety logs and identify any bespoke and targeted PSHE that may be needed. 

A programme of practical safeguarding activities, often working with specialist external providers, are used to support the curriculum:

• NSPCC – assemblies, lessons and workshops – Speak out, stay safe and Pants.
• People who help us and Stranger danger.
• Road safety and Pedestrian Skills
• Bike-ability
• Pool and water safety in the PE curriculum
• Water safety – Lifeboat Rescue links
• Fire awareness and visits from the Fire Brigade.
• Visits to school from the school nurse team.
• Work with our Police Community Support Officers to respond to local issues.
• High school transition opportunities, with additional support for children with SEND.
• Collective Worship centred around teaching Christian values and promoting understanding of others.
• Promoting personal risk assessment skills through visits, as well as during play and outdoor learning.
• The safe use of technology (Esafety) is taught through our Computing curriculum.
